Day in the Life Project libday8 30 January 2012
Decided this year to add things on this blog rather than using Twitter as tweets disappear after a while.
It's twenty to three pm and I am at last able to be in my office getting near the computer. Spent my 9-11 am in my Russian class as usual during term time, then I did a tour, partly in German for our new Erasmus visitor from Germany, then it was lunch time which I spent doing a language exchange Russian-French with an Ukrainian friend. Back at work, did a tour, partly in French for a finalists student, helped one student finding something on the shelves (and felt miserably so I need to do more searching and contact the Tutors just in case they ran away with the thing... happens sometimes), helped another student with audio-visual material, and now I am sitting in my office. Pfew!
Thinks to do now: receipt of books & CDs received from Blacwells, classification onto our house system (similar to Cambridge Language Centre) and cataloguing of those. Many other things to do, but let's see already if I can achieve this!
4.21 pm Yes! Managed to do as indicated above. Helped more students with audio-visual material in the library. Sorted out VAT differences on an order (there's VAT for books, there's VAT for CDs, but what do you do for books with accompanying material? VAT at 5 per cent I reckon).
4.34 pm updated the website with the latest information about borrowing from the library. We are still on a lending pilot.
4.38 A company that I contacted in order to get more library furniture has just phoned, they are not making "this kind of table anymore". Oh well, I am still waiting from quotes from two other companies.
4.39 reading emails from the LIS Copyseek, sometimes I understand what they are talking about, sometimes I do not. Today, I just about understand. Happy about that. That reminds me that there is a deadline for that copyright consultation. I must be courageous and go to the Law Library to have my brain streched by the copyright laws of this country and see how we can improve things based on my experience here at the Language Centre. This time we are all working together at Oxford under the umbrella of monsieur Mike Heaney, which does make sense really. Not sure if tomorrow I'm going to the talk, in German, of the head of the Pirate's party, though it would have been interesting. (heard last week, monsieur Wikipedia online, that was fantastic!). But rather than continuing to type here, I must think about the work I'm going to give to my extended hour assistant. A demain!
