is BUdi a good Aussie mate?
Janet Turley, Faculty Librarian, university of the Sunshine Coast, Queensland

The University opened in1996 8000 students

It is about engaging first year students in skill development: links with academics, going to class and drop in (BUdi) : happens once a week, students come and get answers before they can have questions,  staff come too, space important, 25 up to 60 people coming! 650 students in the year.

What the students said about it: promoting peer learning and student connection, selflearning, self confidence, perseverance, independence.

Findings: good male attendance, they probably like the informal nature. Grades: higher grades for BUdi attendents.

Limitations: securing the space, just once a week, managing waiting time, providing adequate number of subject specialists, size of university? ensuring staff buy in.

Nextstep: funding, online version, more versions for other fields, research/grant into the programme

Conclusion: as usual, it is always a pleasure to see what Austrialian libraries are up to, because they are always up to something great! (I am in contact for example with my lovely colleague Michele Liu from Sydney University Language Centre). (nevertheless, I wish staff at Oxford Brookes University had written a paper about this as they were doing something extremely similar while I was working there)
