Thing 6 me, myself & I

OK... so for thing 6 23 Things for Research... you have to... Consider your "personal brand" hm... not feeling too comfortable with such terminology but I understand what it means so let's go into... our web ego and google ourself...

3,800 results on Google .co.uk  for my name without the accent, only 3,150 with the accent... what appears first are social media: twitter first, google +, Linkedin, my Russian blog and a review I did for Daily Info ages ago... hm... yes, reflects the many things I do I suppose. As I already have an account for the library, I thought I would not get different accounts for my name, but of course Linkedin will be more professional than my Russian blog! (though it is also professionaly related one could argue)

Then my name + library: quite good, realise that my presentations from last week are already there (I put them on the blog and perhaps on twitter, google + and facebook can't remember)

In Social Mention... zero results. "Network Error" in the MIT "Personas" (as last week, changed browsers, used my Yandex and Chrome ones, still doesn't work).

Google adwords... hm not sure I understand that one.

"try to be consistent across all platform" I disagree here, sometimes I am a library, sometimes I am a librarian, sometimes I am a reviewer, a photograph, a poet, and a Russian learner. But yes, best to be up-to-date and also separate the "private" (as much as one can speak of "private" in the www!) from the "professional". But I do admit my own twitter account does both, and so it is for my google + account... I'm a librarian who likes to do many other things. I suppose if I were writing pornography, or taking nude photographes I would have other accounts, probably not under my real name anyway. Somehow being a writer and a photograph and using the web 2.0 world helps me understand a few things about copyright... it's like not being a librarian anymore but still trying my best to not break copyright law... or rather to see others breaking copyright law using pictures I have taken, etc...

I think the biggest professional versus "personal" is on facebook: I'm friends with real friends and friends with colleagues etc... key things perhaps are not to moan about work, no name blame, no pictures of you in embarrassing moments... and the rest really... there is as much as one can do, and as a French person, I am sometimes very angry about things and have a moan on facebook. Happens. And I regret it later but we are human after all, and also I believe, are entitled to our cultural differences.

Ok, let's answer the questions now:
  • How easy were you to find online? Were you happy with what you found? What sort of ‘person’ emerged, and what might other people think about him or her? What did you, or might you, do to address this? Yes, was pretty easy to find myself online, a bit disapointed web 2.0 sites are still freaking out in front of a typical French name!
  • How important do you think it is to maintain a professional presence online? It is important of course, and very important you keep up to date (linkedin!) but I have a problem with the word "professional" here... I might not get money with my poetry but I take it as seriously as my paid work...
