Thing 14 Wikipedia

"What are your thoughts on Wikipedia as a source of information? Do you think it is reliable? Do you think that having the information on the history and talk pages available adds to your understanding of page topics?"

I have used wikipedia for a long time now for information on languages. Alongside Omniglot, it is the best referential tool I have found on the web. It also offers, bottom of page, external links for learning the language. It also has great multilingual resources and is a good tool for learning a language once you have passed beginner's level.

Yes, it is reliable, so far I have only noticed one mistake on it (on the page about Coco Chanel) and perhaps yes, on more political pages but I do not go to those pages for my work.

Also wikipedia has got great apps for your smartphone so it is really easy to check a fact (though I hope you won't use it for your famous pub quizzes!)

Just read an article in Le Point

This article (in French, but I’m sure Bing or Google translate could give you some idea of the subject) speaks about the fact that sometimes there is false information on wikipedia (and we all know that, but perhaps you thought, like me, that the false information was about sensible subjects, such as religions, politics etc…) in the form of false article. One person invented a war, that never existed… another a place (an island) etc… of course, such persons are then forbidden to publish on wikipedia.
