Visit from School Librarians
Yesterday I had the visit of School Librarians from Oxfordshire and Berkshire organised by Gloria Clarke, Open Learning Centre Manager and the Secretary to SLA Central & East Berkshire Branch.
It was a great occasion to share our experience and for me, to ask about language learning collections in school libraries.
I was impressed at the effort some librarians made for marketing their collections, such as selecting a particular language with a flag decoration. I also discovered some reading for pleasure books I did not know. A few librarians mentioned the fact that readers like to read books they already know, such as Harry Potter. Glad to know we have a few of those, in many languages (German, French... Welsh!)
But the overall atmosphere in school libraries is that languages material are not used much and that also, not much budget is thrown into it.
This is a shame. Hopefully things will improve. After all, a few articles were written about the fact that an "easy way" into getting into Oxford University is by taking a language degree... we will see...
