Inventory control year II

Preparing slowly but surely for inventory control.

This year, I'm redoing the DVD collection as it is one of the most popular lending collection. A good way to see whether some classification mistakes have been done.

For the first time, I'm attacking the Reference collection. A bit scary because I know a lot of oddities will be found. But that's the main point of the inventory. I will also take an opportunity to do some substantial weeding.

For DVDs:
So far, the Library Assistants have made sure the DVDs were on good order on the shelves. As that was at the end of Trinity Term (mid-June) let's hope it hasn't moved to much since...

A few oddities have already been noticed by Sara Burnell, Bodleian Digital Library Systems and Services
  • Four "DVDs" are in fact books. My mistake for two: poor Francois Villon (one of my favourite poets, well when I can understand him...) and Jean Giono are now back into book classification and NOT DVD classification
  • A lot of reference material which should be reference only for students, is lending (200!). This is due to the fact that over the years I have made a lot of this material lending as they were reading, or cultural books. These books were classified before my time and ought to be reclassified. Perhaps something for my new ERASMUS to do in their spare time in Michaelmas Term?
I've failed to find the bus from Osney where the scanner was, but met a very interesting Librarian some special collections I did not know. We spoke of digital archiving and that I might need his help on a book review I have to do, and on the difference between colloquial Londonian English between north and south London. (can't give example, too rude...)

I will get the scanner this afternoon! So that I can start bipping happily from Monday onwards.
